ONE DOZEN SKILLS WHITES NEED TO LEARN
- To acknowledge our power and privilege,
and feeling comfortable in using them to foster change.
- To acknowledge our heritage of racism without
feeling diminished, devalued or without credibility.
- To see our self-interest in overcoming bias
and exclusionary behaviors.
- To understand our cultural identity and
appreciate its strengths and value.
- To speak out without blame or animosity in identifying
incidence of racism and bias.
- To engage with others honestly and openly,
using clear and direct communication.
- To build and encourage coalitions with others
who wish to work to eliminate racism and all forms of oppression.
- To find allies in the struggle, and treat
all people as potential allies.
- To lean into discomfort, realizing that opportunities for
learning, growth and change are rarely comfortable.
- To stay positive, cheer even the smallest of successes,
and keep moving forward even when the goal seems unattainable
or the barriers insurmountable.
- To Be Brave.
The
above list encompasses some of the content and strategy THE CONVERGENCE CENTER utilizes
when conducting Diversity Training.
“The virtual invisibility that whiteness affords
those of us who have it is like psychological money in the
bank, the proceeds of which we cash in every day while others
are in a state of perpetual overdraft.”---Tim Wise
The
work of privilege involves challenging those very privileges;
to not do so means we do nothing to rectify the injustice.
Our Diversity Training focuses on the various “isms” (racism,
sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism) that pervade
our society and that every service provider holds (either
overtly or covertly) and must manage, in order to be effective
in the delivery of human services.
The Convergence Center has
expertise in crafting workshops and trainings that make exploring
issues of diversity and white privileging challenging and
exciting all within an environment of safety and respect.
Let us design a workshop to meet your agency or
organization’s individual diversity needs.
